Gemma Rogers: My Idea of Fun (from the album No Place Like Home)
Out now on Tiny Global Productions
They say: Gemma Rogers is a London fashion plate, a witty raconteur, a strange and compelling presence in England’s visionary avant–garde, and the owner of two dachshunds. “No Place Like Home” is her stunning debut album – depth, humour, romance and heartache, social commentary, imaginative wit, ludicrous fun and more from a brilliant new artist.
Ged Babey says: You will not be able to get this song out of your head. A new star is born!
The best pop stars are born and not ‘made’. Charisma can’t be bottled. Some artists have a natural, devil-may-care coolness about them.
Remember the first time you saw Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen or Neneh Cherry on TV? Star quality and personality shining through.
Gemma Rogers is a brand new artist from that there London and My Idea of Fun – the song and video – are gonna catapult her into the public consciousness and stardom… we would hope, because it’s irresistible, catchy, infectious fun – showcasing a smart songwriter full of personality and charm.
My Idea Of Fun, a tale of frequent drunken regret, comes with a video of minimalist humour and visual brilliance… with the humour of Ian Dury and a similar verité of London life found in the best of Madness …. via the LDN of Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and the Libertines I would venture. The production reminds me of those brilliant early Skint Records / Fat Boy Slim singles. The art is by David Shillinglaw who is a name we will surely hear more of.
Such a great video! Almost instantly iconic. Classic black and white. Great graphics, A real Camden Dickensian chic. Heavy mascara. Wild hair tucked into a Lord Snooty topper. Expressive face and an uninhibited, natural choreography and sense of fun.
It’s a whirlwind of pop-cultural reference points and influences; the mix of graffiti art and emoticons in a brainstorming ‘word-cloud’. The black suit, white shirt of Ian Durys ‘Sweet Gene Vincent and the cool androgyny of Robert Mapplethorpes Patti Smith portrait. The Artful Dodger top hat at an angle in the same way as Peter Doherty wears a trilby. The Cleopatra, Siouxsie and Winehouse eye-make-up and the heavy lids of Thunders and all-night party-people. The pick-it-up ska beat and dub echo filtered thru Fat Boy Slims Rockefeller Skank…
The lyric is just a free-wheeling free-flowing rap about a day in the life of a young person looking for kicks, hoping for love, falling back on the faithful stand-by alcohol. The way the idea-of-fun goes from being ‘a little-glass-of-rum’ to a whole bottle as the narrative progresses is a telling warning and wryly funny.
Every song on the No Place Like Home album is different to the last and it’s a fascinating album full of class, grace and wit. Smart, clever pop music of a kind you rarely hear nowadays. Indie in essence but effortlessly mainstream should It get the attention it deserves.
Gemma’s debut album is sure to stir up deep interest and will be supported by a number of videos and live performances, plus free digital singles featuring otherwise unavailable non- album tracks.
